§ 15.04.170. Rafters—Size and spacing—Span.

  • Rafters shall not be less than two-inch by six-inch and spaced not more than twenty-four inches on center and, wherever possible, rafters must be nailed to the outer end of ceiling joists and well fastened to top plate. Where rafter length is greater than eighteen feet, purlin plates must be installed as near the center of the span as possible and such purlin plates must be supported by two-inch by four-inch braces not over six feet on center and such braces must rest on a load-bearing wall or partition. No valley or hip rafter may be less than two-inch by eight-inch.
